The first rye bread I tasted was those square sliced ones you see in a vacuum packed bag with an astonishing expiry date of another whole year. The funny thing is that as I went through the list of ingredients I couldn’t really see anything peculiar, all sounded normal and non-artificial with no non-pronounceable preservatives. Maybe it was just the vacuum packing? Although I finished the pack in the end, I didn’t particularly enjoy eating it and didn’t fancy trying rye bread again. Continue reading

Lentil Rice – M’jaddarah
Yes I’m back again..
It’s been a few busy weeks and yet still more to come! Do I just have to stop staying “I’m busy”, as this always seems to be the case? I know.. from now on I’ll only mention it if it’s been fairly quiet, how about that? Whichever the case, “Determination, perseverance and patience”, I always tell myself. Continue reading
Kale, Cannellini and Quinoa Pilaf
This is a quick post about this simple meal which I can’t seem to get enough of at the moment. I was going through Anjum’s Indian Vegetarian Feast and thought I’d give the recipe a try. Two days later and I’ve made it 3 times already, and becoming addicted to it. It only takes about 20 minutes to make too. Continue reading
Kale Crisps
I’ve been going through a lot of so called ‘spring’ cleaning lately. Going through the wardrobes I found old clothes and broken hangers stuffed behind other unwanted items. The drawers had a few odd pairs of socks and old crunched up t-shirts. The garden was also in much need of weeding and tidying after the cold prolonged cruel months we had in the UK. Last year we invested in a small vegetable patch, and the only surviving crop left is plenty of kale and leeks. Determined not to waste my slightly neglected crop, I’ve been going through my collection of cookbooks, food magazines and of course many amazing food blogs for inspiration. If time allows, more of that will follow soon. It’s always good to spring clean your body too! Continue reading
Spelt Soda Bread
Ahhh Bread! Why is there so much negative publicity around it? Is it not a staple food eaten by so many around the globe for over centuries? From a simple flat barley, corn-tortilla or roti bread, to an enriched Parisian delicacy such as croissants; it’s amazing how simple plain grains can be turned into these mouthwatering and irresistible inventions. Continue reading
Dieting, fasting, and lentil soup
Prepare yourself for a long post. Why? It’s about my dieting experience, the latest scientific research about fasting and a quick recipe for a traditional lentil soup, I can’t help it.
Thankfully, I’ve never been overweight, don’t have any food allergies or intolerances and never restricted myself from anything in particular. I’ve even been tested for caeliac disease due to my ongoing struggle with anaemia, tiredness and sometimes bloatedness. As you age, weight slowly and devilishly starts creeping up, then you realise you are no longer the teenager who ate whatever they wanted. In the quest to shed a few kilos I have put my body through the following: Continue reading
Spicy Moroccan carrot salad
You know when out of good-will and the determination to eat more vegetables, you cram your fridge drawer with seasonal veg, dreaming of the colourful concoctions you will create. A few days later that drive is slightly plummeted by mild laziness and the fact that your kids will start picking all the goodness out of their plates, pulling up faces like as if you want to torture them with it. Truthfully, it’s not very exciting chewing on a carrot stick when your tummy is rumbling, while hoping you’d find a more tempting treat lurking around the fridge. But no! All vegetables! Having found a neglected half a bag of carrots today, I was determined to make something exciting out of it.
